Week 2: Top 5 College Football Games

Well, week 1 of the season didn't give us much to watch outside of Bo Nix's heroics against Justin Herbert and the Oregon Ducks. Although it's still cupcake week for some programs, there a couple of games with serious College Football Playoff implications. Here are my top 5 games of the week:

5: Ohio Bobcats @ Pitt Panthers|11am, ACCN| Panthers -23.5

Pittsburgh v Notre Dame

It's always good for MAC fans to keep an eye on the favorites. With Toledo on a bye week and the Falcons a 23.5 pt. underdog on the road against Kansas St., Ohio is the team to watch. They were picked to win the MAC this year, and they have a hell of an athlete under center in Nathan Rourke. We didn't get to see anybody wave the jolly roger flag last week, but with Pitt only favored by a touchdown, that could change on Saturday.

4. Western Michigan @ #19 Michigan St. |7:30, BTN| Spartans -16

The Spartans have a lot to prove in terms of their offense. If you watched any of their game last week against Tulsa, I'm sorry. Spartan QB Brian Lewerke went 21-37 for 192 yards and only one touchdown against Tulsa. Western Michigan has been a consistent program in the MAC, and will be the biggest threat to the Toledo Rockets in the Western Division. With it being an in-state opponent, the Broncos will be out for blood in East Lansing.

3. Cincinnati @ #5 Ohio St. |Noon, ABC| Buckeyes -16

Don't get me wrong, this one could end up being a slaughter if the Buckeyes come out like they did last week against FAU. Just don't expect Cincinnati's defense to look as lost as Lane Kiffin's Owls unit did. With Luke Fickell being a former interim Head Coach for the Buckeyes and the Bearcats being an in state opponent, I think this could end up being a game in the 4th quarter. I think Ryan Day was holding back against FAU the last three quarters, so I want to see more of what this offensive unit can do. Cincinnati is coming off a power 5 conference win against UCLA and they'll be fired up.

2. #12 Texas A&M @ #1 Clemson |3:30, ABC| Tigers -17.5

College Football Playoff National Championship Presented By AT&T - Alabama v Clemson

Now it's starting to heat up. The final two games on this countdown are going to be excellent. Personally, I'm not sold on Texas A&M as a championship contender just yet. But last year at home, the Aggies nearly upset the would be National Champions. The thing is, they were at home last year. This year, they get to witness the Tigers running down the hill at Memorial Stadium through a sea of orange and purple balloons, only to find Spiccoli's doppelganger under center. Trevor Lawrence had a rough outing in the week 1 victory over Georgia Tech, throwing for a mediocre 168 yds,one touchdown and two picks. Look for him to have a bounce back performance this week.

1. #6 LSU @ #9 Texas |7:30, ABC| Tigers -6

Georgia Southern v LSU

This is without a doubt, the best game this week. Texas is finally relevant again under Tom Herman, and the LSU Tigers have to prove that they belong to be ranked as high as they are. Both QB's had identical stats in their week 1 openers. Joe Burrow for LSU threw for 278 yds and 5 touchdowns while Sam Ehlinger for Texas threw for 276 yds and 4 touchdowns. If it weren't for Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa and Jonathan Taylor, I think both of these guys would be legitimate Heisman contenders. The question will be on the Longhorn defense and if they can stop a program that finally complimented an ever prominent run game with a competent quarterback. Let's see if a Big 12 team can finally play defense.
