New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was reportedly arrested on serious charges Saturday (October 5), hours before the team's Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday (October 6).

Peppers, 29, a team captain, is set to face charges of "assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class B substance believed to be cocaine" during an arraignment on Monday (October 7), the Braintree Police Department confirmed to ESPN's Mike Reiss. The alleged assault victim received treatment at the scene.

Peppers was absent from the Patriots' 15-10 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday, having been ruled out on Saturday, though he had previously dealt with a shoulder injury that limited him in practice last week. Police announced Peppers' arrest on Monday, noting that they responded to a report of an altercation between two people at a residence early Saturday morning.

The Patriots issued a statement confirming that they were "aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating," but refrained from additional comment via ESPN. Peppers is in his eighth NFL season, joining the Patriots in 2022 after stints with the Cleveland Browns (2017-18) and New York Giants (2019-21). The former first-round pick recorded 23 tackles, one interception and one pass defensed in his first four games of the 2024 season.
